Finally this afternoon, 3 x 200W 34 volt solar panels installed on the arch.
Wired in series, they can produce 5 Amps at over 100 Volts which when reduced to 24 VDC by the MPPT charge controller should result in 20 Amps on a good day. AND we know also have dinghy davits so we can hoist the dinghy up under the arch when travelling short distances rather than have to lift it up and put it in the aft cabin top. All very cool ! The latest in Cruising Comfort Technology ! Waterproof bean bags !! Much more comfortable than sitting on the seat cushions when on watch, or at anchor, reading a book, or sipping a G&T ! And a little tool kit I now can't do without I bought this in Bunnings for about $10 ! The T-bar ratchet driver and bits have proved Incredibly useful for small screws and bolts. The Solar arch went on today without any real problems.
The new copper earth strap installed in the sump. An extra guard rail on the stove top to prevent fry-pans flying out unexpectedly. New power outlets in the galley fed by the new 1500W inverter above the sinks so we can use small kitchen appliances without having to run the generator
Got stuck into the oil and filter changes this afternoon, and as usual spilt the engine oil in the bilge. The filter on this Yanmar engine is mounted horizontally and no matter what precautions one takes it is inevitable that oil ends up under the engine.
I found a US co. that makes a remote mount for filters and I think this might be the go, so the filter can be upright and will then hold all the oil in it as its unscrewed. Its HERE, anyone any comments about this idea ? In any event it's all done, engine, gearbox, genset, watermaker.... Well all seemed to be going well yesterday until the welder ran out of argon gas.
More gas ordered, but by lunchtime today it hadn't turned up. So delays....looks like the earliest we'll get it it in the boat will be Monday, but knowing the way things are that will probably be Tuesday. Visited the solar panel man to say I'd pick them up early next week... pick up what he says... my solar panels that I paid for last year and that you said you would hold until I came back from Tahiti. Oh, he says, well, we had a run on those panels and we're out of stock. Hey now, hold on, I paid for those panels and you said you would hold on to them. Well I'm sorry were out of stock. So, you sold the panels I had already paid for to someone else ? We're out of stock.... Well this is a conversation that's going nowhere. So what do we do ? We've a shipment coming now... So when will it be here ? About 3 to 4 weeks Well that's not much good to me now I'll refund your money.. No...I need the panels...I guess I'll just have to wait I'm sorry about that So in the end we agreed that I would keep intouch and he will ensure that the panels will be available for me next visit. Replaced the middle and aft boom blocks today, the middle one was broken.
What a job ! The bolts were seized of course and wouldn't move even with an impact wrench. Only answer drill em out....wow talk about hard work, even with cobalt tipped drills it took a long time. But the new blocks are on now and hopefully no more problems |
