Got my Secchi disk together today and made a first measurement
…..11.40m
What’s a Secchi disk ?
It’s a 30cm white disk with a weight attached. It’s lowered into
the sea on a measuring tape until the disk disappears from view and the depth noted. This depth is the Secchi depth and it’s taken as a measure of the phytoplankton population, the deeper it is the less
phytoplankton.
Sailors all over the world are participating in this “Citizen Scientist” project to collect this data and feed it in to a database at Plymouth University in the UK.
There’s an app for your smartphone that takes a GPS location and date / time. You input the depth and when there's a network connection, it sends
the data.
Very cool !
