Today I installed a new ventilator I bought some time ago. A much simpler device. It won't leak, it's glued onto the hatch with Sikaflex !
Elyse had a solar powered ventilator in the hatch over the saloon. When we first bought the boat this ventilator leaked. When I finally managed to cure the leak, it stopped working ! Today I installed a new ventilator I bought some time ago. A much simpler device. It won't leak, it's glued onto the hatch with Sikaflex ! Also, something simple, a piece of dowel between the radio and the bulkhead to stop the charts falling out on starb'd tack. Should colour it in I suppose !

After a week on the hardstand, it was good to get back on the water. We took off for Great Barrier straight from the travel lift ! Gt Barrier is always great, calm and quiet, nothing happening, idyllic.
On the way back going south saw Stenlager II, Peter Blake's Whitbread winner, powering northwards. The old girl still looks pretty classy ! The watermaker has two motors 24VDC and 220VAC. There's a switch selector on the control panel to choose the power source.
Whilst it would run on 220VAC with the genset running, it wouldn't run on 24VDC which we usually do when motoring. The investigation and repair has taken all morning ! But OK, its all done....it was the solenoid on the DC motor. Turned it on checked there was power to the solenoid and power to the solenoid coil, but it didn't go. Disconnected the power cables from the solenoid and connected together - it runs. Took off the solenoid, all the connectors were corroded. Measured across the coil connections -Megohms- took it apart and inside one of the coil wires had broken off the connector. Cleaned everything, re-soldered the coil wires, replaced all the connectors on the wires leading to the solenoid. Put it all back on and it runs !! The solenoid is held on the motor with two bolts and nuts through the end cap, easy to get off, but impossible to put back on without removing the end cap, which is also not possible without removing the motor. I reassembled it to the motor with large self tapping screws and Loctite thread locker. I will source another 24VDC solenoid to replace this rusty thing and mount it somewhere else. The antifouling (Micron 77) is done (apart from the pads and under the keel - which will be done tomorrow in the travel lift slings), Propspeed on the Autoprop, ready to go !
Back in the water Friday 3pm !! Two coats of Micron 77 sprayed on today. The keel needs more attention, its should be finished today and painted tomorrow !
This morning installed the new Victron Skylla i 100Amp 24 volt charger in the engine room. It's replacing the ol;d generation Dolphin charger which was not programmable or adjustable for different battery types.
The new charger is quite a bit taller than the old one so it necessitated turning the smaller 30A charger on its side in order to fit it in. But fit it did and 2 hours later it's all working ! Well, here we are again, hauled out at Gulf Harbour for antifouling. Took off the prop and replaced the wearing ring (bague d'usure) and the seals, changed the oil in the C-drive, cleaned the rope cutter(new zinc), greased the Autoprop and put it all back together. Serviced the bowthruster, changed the oil, changed the shaft seal and the up and down seals and the trunk lip seal...and then today spent 3 hours adjusting the myriad of interacting bits - cables, sensors, pins - to get everything to sit right with the new seals...what a pain in the a.s.! The painters have sanded the hull, ground and primed the rust spots on the keel and the odd spots on the rudder, so we're all ready to go for painting. 100m of Italian Maggi Aqua 4 10mm ISO chain arrived this afternoon, that's all hooked on and stowed. Inside, new lockers under the companion way steps and shleves in the corners of the seating in the saloon to stop stuff disappearing into the bilge when cupboards are opened - all done just waiting for veneer Picked up the new Victron 100 Amp 24 Volt charger this morning, installing it is tomorrow's job.
