The vege man and his family, putting from boat to boat with fresh lettuce, pakchoy, kasava, potatoes for sale. Judith relaxing in the cockpit There must be an international competition for the ugliest boat. Here are two prime contenders !!
Judith arrived by air on the evening of the 18th, provisioning the next day then off to Musket Cove and thence the Yasawa Islands.
Yesterday in Yalobi Bay, Waya Is Today in the Blue Lagoon, opposite Nanuya Sewa resort.... Courtesy of Cook Is Times : An elderly Swedish couple had to be rescued from a yacht after their mast broke in four-metre swells near the Cook Islands. Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) said it detected a beacon alert from the vessel at around 7:15pm on Monday (local time). Satellite phone contact was also established with the 11.2 metre yacht, called Blue Horizon, via the Swedish Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre. A 69-year-old woman and 70-year-old man ended up being rescued 125 nautical miles (231km) north-east of the Cook Islands. RCCNZ Search and Rescue Mission Controller Neville Blakemore said the Swedish couple aboard the yacht feared the broken mast would put a hole in the hull. An aircraft was dispatched from the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Papeete, Tahiti to over fly the yacht. It confirmed that the nearest rescue vessel was the tanker Stena Paris, located around 150 nautical miles (280km), or 10 hours sailing, away. "The tanker was diverted to rescue the couple and they were successfully taken aboard, uninjured, at round 9 this morning," Blakemore said. "Weather conditions were not great, with swells of around four metres, so it was excellent work by the master and crew of the Stena Paris to get the couple aboard without incident.” The Stena Paris is now continuing its voyage to Papeete but the yacht has been abandoned, with a warning issued to shipping. Blakemore said the rescue was a good example of RCCNZ working well with a number of overseas agencies. Nice two days in Makogai. Weather was o'cast and raining a lot. Did the tour of the giant clam hatchery where they ow have turles as well and are about to start an oyster seeding program for pearl farming.
The leper hospital graveyard has all been cleared and otherwise all is very tidy. Left Makogai yesterday to head to the northern side of Viti Levu. Great sail up to the inside of the reef and then most of the way north inside the reef until the wind died. Anchored at Nananu-I-Cake near the Dolphin resort. Met Bill from Liberation, a new Zealand boat I've seen very year up here since 2010. Cruising permit and Coastal clearance obtained yesterday, along with some provisioning...quite a good market at Savusavu, Fiji Meats have a small store here with nice bacon, steak etc, and there's a gourmet food / liquor store which is packed with lots of very interesting, but quite expensive, stuff.
Its been raining all the time we've been in Savusavu and there's a wind warning out for Fiji waters - the forcast has been the same for the past three days. This morning the cloud is breaking up, the sky is turning blue - its a sailors pants day, we're off to Makogai ! Original plan was to head for Apia, Samoa, but looking at the timing we wouldn't arrive until Saturday, can't clear in until Monday and then we'd have to leave, so we agreed to go directly to Savusavu, Fiji. We used the mizzen balloner for the first time, man what a great sail, I love it ! Its so easy to deploy and in lightish aft winds it makes Elyse fly..we kept it up for two days until the wind died...and the rain started. The mizzen ballooner in action !
Passing the East cost of Taveuni in the night some commotion in the cockpit - crew got things a bit wrong and furled the genoa thewrong way round the foil, tighten up the stbd sheet so much that t broke the end off the pole, tripped the furler motor cct breaker and , as we found out later, burnt out one of the furler solenoids. Pole end easily fixed with new rivets, but the solenoid is another story. But Amel service have come to the party and a new one is on its way as we speak by FEDEX from France....Bravo Amel So, Suvarov to Savusavu 1073 nm 6 days 8 hours Easy clearing in at the Copra Shed Marina, they bring the officials to the boat, all done, very pleasant, just had to go ashore to pay the Health fee $172.50 and the Biosecurity fee $89.70 and we're done. Joy and Lucas have left the boat here and joined another boat owned by an Austrian(?) friend of Joy's. So lets explore the sights of Savusavu ! 690nm from Bora Bora to Suvarov, easy conditions, lightish winds 156nm/day.
Suvarov is beautiful, anchoring is tricky 'cos of lots of coral heads and not much thick stuff on the bottom. Stayed two days here, disappointed to see that teh Cook Is govt haven;t taken any care to preserve anything of Tom Neale's residency here. Its now a maritime reserve, and this year, for the first time, movements were strictly restricted to the anchorage and Anchorage Island. Cook Is bureaucracy is here and one has to clear in and out, pay a fee....just for the atoll of Suvarov, crazy! |
